Hair Preparation for Extensions

How to Prepare Hair for Hair Extensions

Preparing the client’s hair before a hair extension procedure is an important step that ensures a successful result and long-lasting wear of the extensions.
Here is a detailed guide for the stylist:

1. Client Consultation

Hair Condition Assessment
Discuss the client’s expectations and evaluate the condition of their natural hair (thickness, texture, possible damage, hair loss).
Allergic Reactions
Ask the client whether they have any allergies to chemical substances or materials that may be used during the procedure.

2. Washing and Preparing the Hair

Deep Cleansing
Wash the client’s hair with a deep cleansing shampoo to remove any styling product residue, sebum, and impurities. This helps ensure better adhesion of keratin to the hair.
No Conditioner
Do not use conditioner or hair masks, as they may leave a coating on the hair that can interfere with proper attachment during the extension process.

3. Drying and Hair Preparation

Complete Drying
Dry the hair completely, preferably without using any styling products. The hair must be clean and fully dry before starting the procedure.
Brushing
Carefully brush the hair to remove any tangles or knots.

4. Haircut and Sectioning

Trimming
If necessary, trim the ends of the client’s hair to remove split ends. This helps create a smoother and more natural blend with the extensions.
If the client has a blunt haircut (such as a bob), thinning the ends may be necessary to ensure the transition between natural hair and extensions looks soft and natural.
Sectioning
Divide the hair into sections to simplify the extension process. Use clips to secure each section.

5. Choosing the Extension Technique

Selecting the Method
Depending on the client’s hair type and condition, choose the most suitable extension method (keratin bonds, tape-in extensions, microcapsules, etc.).

6. Test Strand

Before starting the full procedure, especially with new clients, test one strand to ensure that the keratin and chosen technique are suitable for the client’s hair.

7. Aftercare Guidance

Explain the basic care rules for hair extensions to the client: which products to use, how to brush the hair properly, and what to avoid (for example, excessive heat or certain chemical products).

8. Starting the Procedure

Begin the hair extension procedure according to the chosen technique. Ensure that each strand is securely attached and blends naturally with the client’s hair.
